Self-Awareness

Our world is beginning to see that we have slowly become desensitized and disconnected from ourselves. We are constantly on the go, distracted by our technology, exhausted by the endless tasks we have to accomplish. Often people can be "asleep" to the world around them, how they are interacting with others and the impact they carry in their energy. There is more anxiety, more depression, more disassociation in the world than ever before.

I often see this with clients on my table. They'll often tell me that they don't know how to relax, point blank. Some jump at first touch, others continue to hold tension while trying to relax, hold their breath, overthink and are not being present with their bodies.

We have a lot to learn about our physical self-awareness. But not only learning with the facts, or our head knowledge, but learning with our bodies. Understanding what it means to have a mind-body connection. Befriending the sensations, responding with love, and changing the narrative of our thought patterns.

Often times, it’s evident that our lack of physical awareness comes from habit, it’s mostly unconscious. How many of us wake up and jump straight to scrolling, or make coffee straight away, yearning for some type of stimulation to keep us away from being with ourselves? How many of us keep on adding to our schedule and call ourselves busy when really, it’s hard to be in silence at home? I’m preaching to the choir, friends. Although my entire life, I’ve enjoyed seeking out rest, I find myself mindlessly resting. I am learning what it means to rest intentionally. To feed my soul, my body, my mind and my spirit with beauty, with presence, with love.

The massage table is a sacred space. I desire for my clients to be able to rest deeply on and off my table, to feel rejuvenated and alive when they leave. But also, I want them to learn to be entirely present with their bodies. What is happening on the micro level that is effecting the macro? What are the rhythms, the flows, the beats doing? How is your breathing? What are your thoughts leading to in your body? How is the temperature, and what do the sheets feel like on the skin? How are your muscles and connective tissue responding to the massage?

Once we practice this, it translates to our day-to-day. What are your shoulders doing when you’re working at your desk? What does your neck feel like when you lay your head on your pillow at night? What kind of energy are you carrying into the world? How are those in your proximity being lifted up or down?

The more self-aware we can be, the better our world will be! The less disconnected we are, the more others can feel the energy and life giving presence you are able to offer. Let us lift ourselves up, let us feel lightness in our life and in our bodies, and may we give back to ourselves all the goodness we give away everyday by being unaware. It starts with awareness, it starts with you, friend.
